Getting Permission

Would anyone know how to go about getting permission to use a building, such as a nightclub, to film in? If so help me out, please.

Go in, find the manager or the facilities manager if possible, and simply ask them. Explain what you're doing, why you're doing it (always say 'media studies' or 'assignment' etc, it usually works a treat) and if they *can* they'll let you.

Might be tricky with a nightclub, they have busy schedules, yet i've always wanted to film in one.

So far, i've managed to use these buildings:

1) A high tech one that had just finished being built, we were actually the first to use it. Just asked the facilities manager.

2) Not a building as such, but we got permission (simply by turning up and asking) to be the closest people to stand near a big building that was blown up. Sweeet.

3) The atrium lobby of a large building, just by going in and seeing the facilities manager, getting his card, and emailing him a date + time to film there. (Funny story, I'd just bought a BB gun and I handed over to the security guard when i was there and said 'just so you don't get the wrong impression, i'll give this to you')

4) School's are always easy to get permission for.

And that's about it. Good luck with the nightclub.

I know that, at least in the UK, most nightclubs take deliveries during the day. Ask the manager if he/she will let you use the place then. If you want it to seem full, good use of extras and camera positioning will come in handy.

Places I've shot at with no problem...

Just by simply explaining to the manager what I'm up too, that it's a film for school, and if it's entered into any sort of competitions or televised, special thanks will be given to them.

1. Zellers - Canadian department store, the eqivelent of Woolworth's in the UK.

2. Skylon Tower - the massive tower that is beside Niagara Falls in Canada. Amazing views from it, and we also shot in the arcade that is in basement of it. It was a NIGHTMARE for sound. In fact, it will probally be unusable.

3. Niagara Falls itself - just asked the 'Niagara Parks Commission,' it costs a couple thousand per hour to shoot there normally, but we explained our situation and budget (0$.)

I think those are the only really 'big deal' locations that I've used...

We've also shot it hotels for free, and other similar places... but nothing that is really hard to get. Remember, all you have to do is ASK!

If you want to film in a nightclub, Mods is quite right about their having a busy schedule, and your being underage (you said you were 17 on another thread if I remember correctly), it might be an insurance issue for the club. We (me and my other underage friends at the time) had to do a bar scene at one point, and couldn't get into 3 local bars due to "liability issues" according to the management. But we ended up asking a prof from a local college, if there was a faculty lounge or something in the facilities, and sure enough, there was, equipped with full bar, pool, and dance floor. What's my point you may ask. If you are unable to find a club for various reasons consider private alternatives, or even decorations and lighting, like a disco ball you can use to make anything look like a club these days. And don't forget the music that goes 'enss enss enss'... And the most obscure place I've filmed was in a world war two Halifax quad engine bomber.

You might also mention how its going to be shown locally to the right age group - and its be a positive thing about the club/venue/bar ---so free advertising......

Thanks All--I am happy to report I've succesfully booked two nights of filming at a picturesque dance club, and it will be nights they are operating, so no extras, and my crew and I get to party for free all night. The owner does films as a hobby, so it was pretty easy, I just have to place the name in it for at least a second. Hey if your ever in arizona go to Club Axis/Radius. Let the promotion begin.
